Events
The Hispanic culture is filled with various traditions and a rich history. The culture's contributions has impacted the lives of many other cultures and is increasingly showing its influence in the US. Our events are aimed to educate the Texas A&M community about Hispanic traditions and history and the manner that these have impacted our lives.
Hola Day
The MSC Committee for the Awareness of Mexican American Culture (MSC CAMAC) invites the incoming Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2013 to “Hola Day,” a program designed to increase student retention rates at Texas A&M. Hola Day is an entertaining way to encourage student campus involvement while simultaneously promoting the construction of a social/academic network. Hola Day will illustrate the warm and friendly nature of the Aggie family and will ignite the students’ will to maximize their potential and enrich their academic experience at A&M. MSC CAMAC members encourage the incoming class to meet current Aggies and former students while enjoying entertaining games and performances along with lots of food and prizes.
Dia de los Muertos
Dia de Los Muerto is a day to celebrate, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations of papel picado, flowers, candy calaveras (skeletons and skulls), and parades. It is believed that the spirit of the dead visits their families on October 31st and leave on November 2nd. The celebration of this day is to make death more of a welcoming and not so much something to be afraid of.
CAMAC is hosting the celebration of Dia de Los Muertos to give those who know what Dia de Los Muertos is and opportunity to celebrate it and honor their lost loved one. It is also a chance to inform other students and Bryan/College Station residents of what Dia is and to give them an experience of what this celebration means in Mexican and Mexican American culture.
Mis Quince Años
Every year, MSC CAMAC invites the Texas A&M student body and the Bryan/College Station community to "Mis Quince Anos!"
This program is a re-enactment of a Quinceanera produced by MSC CAMAC members. A Quinceanera is a Hispanic girl's coming of age celebration which usually includes a Thanksgiving mass if the girl is Roman Catholic. Following the mass, the Quinceanera and her accompaniment arrive at a reception for an elaborate dinner after which she dances the traditional first waltz with her father. It includes traditional dances, free food, explanations of the ceremonies, and music.
Fiesta 505
Every year MSC CAMAC invites the Texas A&M student body and the Bryan/College Station community to Fiesta 505. MSC CAMAC celebrates Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican holiday celebrating the battle at Puebla where the Mexican soldiers defeated the French. This festival celebrates freedom and liberty and the cooperation of Mexicans and Americans. The celebration will be filled with music, food, games, performances, and lots of fun.
